My mom had her appendix out at 10:30pm last night and is resting comfortably in the hospital. She expected to go home today but her white blood count is very low and they want to make sure the levels rise before they release her.
The surgeon told them that her appendix was falling apart and stuck to the colon, and that if they hadn’t removed it, it probably wouldn’t have lasted very long before bursting. They checked for gangrene and cleaned everything out and she should be fine. She’s lucky that they were able to do this laproscopically rather than the big abdominal incision, but she’s still kind of fuzzy on pain meds and has a distended, tender stomach from all the air that’s introduced by the surgery.
She has this silly idea that she and Dad will drive down to Houston on Christmas Day to celebrate. But my brother and I have already decided this is not a good idea, no matter what she thinks, and I told my dad that the Houston folks will come up to them. Her only job right now is to get better, not worry about food or sleep arrangements. She’s not so good at following our directions so I might have to get strict.
Thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts on my mom’s behalf.
